Background of the Study

Land tenure is a critical factor in the development of agriculture, especially in rural areas such as Mubi South Local Government in Adamawa State. Land tenure policies govern how land is owned, accessed, and utilized for agricultural purposes. These policies determine the security of land ownership and the ability of farmers to invest in and expand agricultural activities. Over the years, Mubi South has witnessed various changes in land tenure systems, with implications for agricultural production. This study investigates the effects of land tenure policies on the expansion of agriculture in Mubi South, with a focus on land access, security, and the role of traditional and formal systems of land ownership.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although agriculture is a major economic activity in Mubi South, land tenure issues such as land disputes, unclear land ownership, and limited access to arable land have hindered the expansion of agricultural practices. Despite several land reforms and policies aimed at addressing these issues, farmers continue to face challenges related to land access and ownership security. This study seeks to evaluate the impact of existing land tenure policies on agricultural expansion in Mubi South and identify the barriers that limit agricultural growth.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of land tenure policies on agricultural expansion in Mubi South.

  2. To examine the challenges faced by farmers in accessing land for agricultural purposes.

  3. To explore the relationship between land tenure security and investment in agricultural activities.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How have land tenure policies affected agricultural expansion in Mubi South?

  2. What challenges do farmers face in accessing land and securing tenure for agricultural purposes?

  3. How does land tenure security influence investment in agricultural practices and productivity?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Land tenure policies have a significant positive impact on agricultural expansion in Mubi South.

  2. Farmers in Mubi South face challenges related to land disputes, unclear ownership, and limited access to land.

  3. Land tenure security is positively related to increased investment and productivity in agriculture.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the role of land tenure policies in agricultural development in Mubi South and similar rural areas. The findings will inform policymakers on how to improve land policies to promote agricultural expansion and ensure food security in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Mubi South Local Government, Adamawa State, with an emphasis on the impact of land tenure policies on agriculture. Limitations include potential difficulties in obtaining reliable data on land ownership and usage patterns, as well as the complexity of traditional land tenure systems.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Land Tenure Policies: Laws and regulations that define the rights of individuals and groups to use, manage, and own land.

  • Agricultural Expansion: The increase in the area of land used for agricultural activities, including crop production and livestock farming.
